What is Given 12”x 24” oil on wood.
It’s a small painting, a small phrase, just three small words, but with many thoughts behind it. What have we been given? Are we cherishing it or taking it for granted? Is anything “a given” ? Our whole life is flux. What is given can be taken away. What can actually be “given” to us? What is given, that we need, except what we give to ourselves?
This painting is about being grateful for what we have, in the present, without desire for things we don’t (yet) have, or things we lost, or never had to begin with. I’ve spent a lot of my life looking back on situations that didn’t turn out the way I wanted, or looking forward, hoping to change things that I have into new things.
Maybe I can, maybe I will, but I have also learned, through tough lessons, to be grateful for what I have right now. The present is a gift.
