The Six is a new gastro pub with great food, artisanal cocktails and an upscale indie/rogue kind of vibe that attracts an adventurous and affluent crowd. Located in the heart of Old Town Calabasas in the West Valley, this venue has several large, flat screen monitors in the dining area, making it an exceptional space for showcasing visual artists. The monthly exhibitions run every day, from opening to closing, in the main dining area.
The venue manager, Jay Gillespie – who is also an artist- hosts monthly Art/Jazz Nights for each exhibition in a clubby back room, called “The Bourbon Room” for its distinctive Makers Mark chandelier and speakeasy decor. On this night artists can meet patrons and each other while enjoying a fun evening of live music, inventive cocktails and great company. Several celebrities have discovered this establishment and have been spotted enjoying the atmosphere, music, art and other entertainment events held here regularly.
Jay and I are both creative West Valley denizens yearning to see more great art make its way to our part of the world, so we decided to collaborate on this series of virtual art exhibitions bringing the works of renowned LA artists to the heart of Calabasas. The Six is named after six NoCal artists from the prohibition era who joined together to create the art they wanted to make, despite the fashions of their time. They were art world outliers who wouldn’t take “no” for an answer and sought to create their own style. This idea of forging new creative territory was the seed of the idea for Art@TheSix
The artists who have contributed their works to these exhibitions, who include Michael Rababy, Osceola Refetoff, Nathan Cartwright, Liz Huston, Adam Stone, Andrea Bogdan, Vakseen, Barbara Kosoff, Doug Webb, Trine Churchill, and many more, are very exciting, well-known and dynamic members of the Los Angeles art scene who show in popular galleries and publications throughout the Los Angeles metro area and around the country. We hope to collaborate on many more of these exhibitions, and continue to bring visually stunning artworks and cutting-edge LA artists into the West Valley, a vast region of art-appreciating (and buying) patrons who are seeking quality cultural experiences in their own zip code.
