Journey to Summerland

72″ x 16″ x 2″ cut out 3D shadowbox panels oil on hardboard. This painting was inspired by the idea of Summerland, an afterlife home of the recently departed, that became popular after WW1. I created this assemblage/3D painting after the death of a dear friend. I wanted to explore ideas of what makes us be “here” in the physical realm. Are we physical vessels for a spirit that leaves when the vessel is used up? Where does our spirit go? The sections of this painting move upwards, like a spirit moving up through a body, passing corporeal depictions of cells, heart and eyes, exiting the top on to the unknown. Signed on verso. Available for viewing in my studio.
