Crossroads are places where the veil between the material and spirit worlds is porous. At a crossroads a person may commune with a dead ancestor, or perhaps a spirit who might grant you a favor. Such was the story behind the Robert Johnson legend of meeting the Devil, disguised as a man at the Crossroads, to whom he sold his soul in exchange for musical genius.
Crossroads exist outside the boundaries of Life and Death, and are referenced in many tales around the world. Hermes and Hecate were crossroads dieties, moving freely between the worlds of the living and the dead. In Haiti this spirit is called Papa Legba. The corresponding Christian saint is St. Peter, the keeper of the keys to the gates of Heaven.
The Crossroads Man, or Woman, is summoned when you wish to reach out to loved ones in the spirit world. There are people who have been so helpful to me in the past, offering counsel and support when I most needed it, but they have passed over. I can still find them at the Crossroads.
